Preparation for the course registration process

The course registration process is probably one of the most stressful process of all, at least in my opinion. This is because this process at Chung-Ang is very different from what I'm used to at my home university. They use the first-come-first-serve rule and you compete with the other students (both local and exchange students). So basically... you just have to be very fast when registering for your courses.

The course registration process is divided in three different periods. Since CAU will send out detailed information about these periods I won't go so much into them. However, I'm going to talk about what you should do to be prepared for this process, especially for the first registration period.

The first period is the most important period for exchange students since only them can register for the english courses during this period. This gives exchange students a higher chance to get into the courses that they want since they don't have compete with the local CAU students but only against each other. However, only business majors are allowed to register for business courses and they are allowed to register for courses in other majors except for art. Other majors are not allowed to register for business nor art courses during this period. To make this clear, if you're enrolled in, for example, College of Engineering then you won't be able to register for business courses or art courses. Therefore if you're a business student or an art student, make sure that your proposed college is College of Business & Economics and College of Art respectively. Additionally, they only accept 7 exchange students per business course.

CAU has this system because business courses are highly competitive. As a business student myself, I was so stressed after finding out about this. But there was nothing I could do except getting prepared for the registration period. It's all about planning ahead guys, and then when the registration opens, all you have to do is to be very quick! The faster you are the higher chance you'll get into the courses!

Here are three things that I did in order to be prepared for the course registration:

1. Look through the up-to-date course list.

CAU will send out the updated course list about three weeks before the first registration period so that you can be prepared and pick out the courses that you'd like to take. If you've gotten access to CAU's course list for previous years, keep in mind that the courses in that list may vary (they might add in new courses or remove some). Even the courses in the up-to-date course list are subject to change. For your information, two of my courses got removed and I had to find replacements for those courses. Additionally, some courses have prerequisites so check your courses if they have any. Here is year 2019 course list.

2. Plan your schedule.

Once you have decided what courses you're going to take, it's time to plan your schedule because you probably don't want to register for courses that crash each other. You can get access to the courses' times and locations by using CAU's course search portal. They will upload the course syllabus once the courses are finalized (which is about 1~2 weeks before the first registration period) so keep an eye out for that. When planning your schedule, make sure to write down the course codes and especially the class numbers so you don't choose the wrong class when registering. CAU also has a special 'system' for the classes' dates and times. You can visit CAU's official blog for further explanation.

3. Have backup courses.

It's always good to have a plan-B for everything, right? These backup courses are good to have in case you don't get into any of the courses that you wanted to take, so take your time and stack up some courses that you can have as backup! However, keep in mind that you can only take max 19 credits (for undergraduates).

As I have mentioned before, some courses may be removed and you won't find them on the course registration page. If this happens to you, you can contact CAU and ask them about the courses but most likely they will say that the courses are removed and that you have to find replacement for those courses.

If you fail to get into any of the courses during the first period or somehow did not complete the course registration, you still have a slight chance of getting in during the second and third period. However, the chances are very slim since you now have to compete with local CAU students. During these periods, they will also look at what year and department you're in and it is highly competitive. In all cases, just make sure to be fast and complete the first course registration!
