Student Visa (D-2)

In this post I'm going to talk about the visa that you should apply for when studying abroad in South Korea. Before applying, you should decide what type of visa that you can apply for, which depends on your nationality, how long you're going to stay in South Korea and the purpose of your stay. In my case, my nationality is Swedish and since I'm going to stay there more than 90 days as an exchange student, the visa that I can and should apply for is called Student Visa (D-2).

Student Visa is basically for international students/exchange students who are planning to stay in South Korea more than 90 days and it applies for your whole study period. For more information on the different types of visa that you can apply for, you should visit the homepage of the South Korean Embassy in your home country. For those of you who live in Sweden, here is a link to the South Korean Embassy in Sweden.

Here are the required documents that you need to send with your application (for Swedish exchange students):
  1. Passport-sized photo (3.5 x 4.5 cm) in color and should be less than 6 months old.
  2. Academic transcript (issued within the last three months).
  3. Financial certificate (at least 20,000 SEK in your bank account).
  4. Certificate of Business Registration (CAU will send you this via email).
  5. Confirmation of Visa Issuance (CAU will also send you this via email).
  6. A completed application form.
  7. Passport.
  8. Visa fee (cash or via Swish). If you pay via Swish, make sure to print out the payment page.
  9. Residence permit (if you're not Swedish).
It says on the embassy's homepage that you are required to provide a certificate of admission letter from the Korean university. However, you don't need to provide this letter if you're going to attend to CAU since CAU has been given this privilege. You should also write a note to notify the embassy about this. The documents that I've written above should be enough to get your visa. Make sure that all documents are in English or Korean.

Note that if you're planning to travel somewhere outside of South Korea during your study period, you should apply for multiple entry visa. Otherwise a single entry visa should be enough.

Make sure to apply for visa as soon as you've gotten the documents from CAU, which should be around the second week of July (for those who attend the fall semester). You can either post your documents or simply visit the embassy yourself (which is a faster way than via postal) and it should take about 2 weeks before your visa is issued. For your reference, it took me exactly 13 days and I sent the application via post.

You can find more useful information about visa here! And once again, don't be afraid to contact me if there's something you're curious about. I hope this post has given you a clearer picture on how to apply for the Student Visa!  🤗
